Truth and Reconciliation day, 🧡!

Last year, September 30th became the official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It honours the survivors as well as all the children that never returned home from the residential schools as well as their families and communities.

Throughout generations, these individuals were stripped of their identities, their freedom and their culture.

Generational trauma is real. The consequences are real. The impact is real.

I encourage you to discuss orange shirt day and the history that led to it with your students. Imagine the influence it’ll make to have an informed generation making decisions in the future, 🙏🏽🧡.

Truth and Reconciliation day, 🧡!

Classroom pet:
Do you have a classroom pet? If not and you’re considering getting one, check out the grant in my Linktree. They have some for Canada and US residents. No, this isn’t a sponsored link or anything like that, I just love animals, 😅😍!

There’s a lot to be said about the qualities you’d develop when you have a pet - empathy, responsibility, compassion, etc. I’ll admit it can be a lot of additional work depending on pet, the classroom dynamics and even your school board.

Side note:
Unfortunately, I don’t have one at the moment but I’d like to discuss it with my principal this year especially since we have a unit on habitats, etc. If he approves, I’ll have my students write him a letter asking him if we may have one. Then, we’ll go from there since I’m torn with which type to get.

If approved, these are the options I’m considering so far:
✅ betta
✅ freshwater aquarium
✅ axolotl
✅ bearded dragon
✅ leopard gecko 🦎
Also considering rabbits or guinea pigs but still reflecting on those.

♥️ I LOVE chameleons (but they tend to stress out very very easily so I don’t think it’s the best environment for one.)

This year, I sent home a document that contained a brief overview of the outcomes the students are supposed to have learned before the 4th grade. My goal was to provide examples, strategies and tips to help any individuals that may be struggling to do so. I explained to the parents that I knew the prior years had been challenging but that we would collaborate throughout the year to help their children attain them if they hadn’t already done so.

I sent it during the second week since I wanted to provide sufficient time for them to revise it before the information session. Ultimately, I want to create a healthy support system for them and their child.

I’m hoping I’ll have a classroom full of parents at Thursday night’s session since I’ll be explaining the :

Emotional Intelligence: 🧠💕

As you get to know me more, I’m positive that you’ll notice I’m very big on emotional intelligence. I’ll often use analogies with my students to help clarify or elaborate certain concepts. We’ll even do the activity of “My life in weeks” where the students get the idea of how many weeks they’ve lived. We discuss how even though they’re approximately 8-9 years old that they’ve already accomplished a lot in their lives, know most of their interests, etc.

Then, we discuss the importance of our choices and I explain that their lives are virtually like an empty book which they get to write. Sure, some people may try to edit it, modify it, give their opinions on it or tell them they prefer a different book (which is fine since we don’t all have the same interests/taste). But that, ultimately, they decide which genre it’ll be, what the ending will be, what the characters and the plot will be - basically that they’re the author and that’s the most gratifying thing because they will get to choose.

***I realize that not everyone is provided with the same opportunities in life therefore we discuss that some book publishing companies may impose certain restrictions (representing life circumstances beyond our control) and that as challenging as it may be, we could seek help in order to attain our goals such as some authors do (they’ll ask other authors, friends, family or individuals they trust for feedback or suggestions), etc.

Usually, on the next day, I’ll present the idea of “The one you choose” (see next slide). Again, bringing up the concept that you get to choose which wolf you want to feed and which will win. The idea of investing your energy in the good or the bad that presents itself in your lives is a vital lesson which will greatly impact them throughout their lives.

One of my goals throughout the year is to help the students implement some of the notions of the growth mindset in order to help them when they face more challenging tasks.

Fundamentally, a growth mindset is the idea that you even if you can’t do something YET - you will be able to in time and that one word changes everything. Learning something new is challenging - even for adults. But it’s that process of making the students aware that yeah, it may be difficult at first and you may very well make mistakes, however, the more you practice the easier it’ll get regardless of the subject matter or skill. We just have to keep trying. Mistakes are normal - for everyone and even help you determine what you can focus on improving, etc.

We also discuss the importance of believing in yourself and persevering even when it’s hard -aka grit. The most simple (yet hard) idea of - trying.

Student: I can’t do this, it’s too hard!!
Teacher: I understanding that when we try new things it can be overwhelming and that you may feel as though you can’t do this YET but give it a try. It may be difficult at first but you will get it and if have any questions or want any help, I’m here always for you.
Student: What if I fail?
Teacher: What if you succeed?

I’ll be sharing some of my favourites this year. I can’t emphasize enough how much they influence my classroom dynamics! Some are rather simple whereas others will require material (usually very little or improvised).

My first activity is called String Web:
Grab some string or wool (and a lot of it - like more than you’d think you’d need, somehow I always run short, 🙃). If you’re using odds and ends, you’ll have to tie them together. I use this game to practice the names of the students in the classroom.

Step 1: Hold onto the end of the ball of string, name a student and chuck them the ball. They then hold onto the strand of string, name a student (that hasn’t been named) and chuck them the ball. Make sure they chuck it in such a way that it forms a web. They continue the process until everyone’s been named. They can ask for help if they’re unsure of the other students’ names. This year, all my students knew the names already so we used last names instead, they loved it!

Step 2: I tell the students that the web represents our classroom and that as long as we work together, it’s strong and we’ll be successful, etc.

Step 3: Then, I ask a few students to drop their string (I choose the ones that’ll have the most impact aka the spider web drops significantly). I then ask them, what happens if we don’t each pull our own weight as a team - they quickly realize that if they don’t each do their own part, we won’t succeed. I then ask a student to hold two pieces of string and ask them what they notice. They’ll usually come up rather quickly with the idea that when you’re struggling academically or socially that you can ask for help whether it’s asking a friend, a teacher or others.

For me, relationships & consistency are two of the most crucial components that ensure successful classroom management. During the first weeks, we establish the rules and the routine. We also have a few fundamental discussions to outline the expectations and their rights as well as the impact of their choices.

We discuss
🤍their rights as children
🤍our vision of an “ideal” classroom
🤍we discuss the pyramid of Maslow and the hierarchy of needs (aka their needs)
🤍the consequences of their choices. For example, the influence of not eating or sleeping enough and the effects it has on their body and the ability to function and learn.
🤍strategies to help us cope through various scenarios we can’t control
🤍qualities of good friends, assessing friendships
🤍respecting differences
🤍how to affirm yourself
🤍who they can rely on during more challenging moments in their lives
🤍believing in themselves
🤍etc.

Once I’ve established my expectations/the rules I ensure that I’m consistent with my words and my actions in order to build trust. I feel as though a few select students will only give us one shot and they’re usually the ones who’ll need me the most throughout the year so I always prioritize investing my time and energy in building those meaningful relationships, 💕!

𝕊𝕙𝕠𝕣𝕥 𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕞 𝕤𝕒𝕔𝕣𝕚𝕗𝕚𝕗𝕖, 𝕝𝕠𝕟𝕘𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕞 𝕓𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕗𝕚𝕥

It takes courage to grow, to challenge yourself, to be vulnerable and to take risks. In all honesty, in order to become the best version of yourself, you’re going to have to become comfortable with the idea of being uncomfortable. When making life choices, I ask myself - but isn’t that worth a few seconds, a few minutes or even a few months of your time if it means that you feel fulfilled and are obtaining your goals?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard. It takes time, effort, perseverance and discipline to prioritize the things you want in your life.

Personally, I like to challenge myself - my failures, my fears, my insecurities. Do I always succeed? That’s a resounding no…but isn’t that the beauty of it? That’s just more opportunity for growth. I get to choose (literally) what I want to invest my energy into - is it relationships? Self-care? Work? Activities? Working out? Landscaping? Travelling? Cooking?

I make the time to reassess my life regularly to ensure it aligns with my goals. When I notice myself veering, I analyze it, address it and put myself back on track. For example, I already know I’ll be implementing several changes to this upcoming school year.

It takes courage to grow, to challenge yourself, to be vulnerable and to take risks. In all honesty, in order to become the best version of yourself, you’re going to have to become comfortable with the idea of being uncomfortable. When making life choices, I ask myself - but isn’t that worth a few seconds, a few minutes or even a few months of your time if it means that you feel fulfilled and are obtaining your goals?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard. It takes time, effort, perseverance and discipline to prioritize the things you want in your life.

Personally, I like to challenge myself - my failures, my fears, my insecurities. Do I always succeed? That’s a resounding no…but isn’t that the beauty of it? That’s just more opportunity for growth. I get to choose (literally) what I want to invest my energy into - is it relationships? Self-care? Work? Activities? Working out? Landscaping? Travelling? Cooking?

Procedural writing activity:
Obviously, the pandemic has challenged us in numerous ways - one has been ensuring that the students remain engaged even with all the additional restrictions.

One activity that I modified was my procedural writing. This year, I had the students write out their plan and do their drafts. Then, I asked them to create a mini animal of their choice with this clay I had on hand. They absolutely loved it. It didn’t take too much time or material and they’ve been begging to do more. The best part is we turned it into an oral communication activity. I hand them hand me their animals and I tucked them away safely (we’d been hiding them through the entire process). They found themselves partners, came to get the necessary clay and found a spot to settle in. Then, they then had to read out their instructions to their partners but were absolutely “forbidden” to add any additional information. The reactions were hilarious and the animals weren’t so bad, 😅!

You could hear some kid yelling way in the back “You didn’t even tell me to put his head on.” Whereas another animal didn’t have any facial features and another had an entirely incorrect body shape, 🙊! Needless to say they quickly understood the importance of specificity and details (adjectives, etc.). They got to tweak their draft before doing their final copy. Needless to say, we’ve started a second round or mini clay figures (but this time they could create anything)!

To teach time, I began by having my students make their very own clock ( they’re big fans of Art Hub for Kids so we imitated their alarm clocks- https://youtu.be/BbSCFCZ1XMs), ⏰! However, I told them they could customize theirs to their liking. I asked them not to add the hands for the minutes and hours. Instead, we made some with paper so they could manipulate them. They keep them in their math binders and take it out for our activities/when they need to refer to it and - they LOVE it.

Ideas to practice telling time with the clocks:

⏰ Pair them up and ask one to pick a time for the other. The other student must show the time on their clock as well as say it. I sometimes asked them to say in for both morning/evening times (i.e. 6h00/18h00).

⏰ A student shows a time on his clock and the other must write it on a whiteboard. I usually specify how many ways I’d like to see it represented (4h00, 4 heures, 16h00, etc).

⏰ A student writes a time on the whiteboard and the other must represent it on the clock.

⏰ We also used them to practice; et quart, moins quart et midi

⏰ They could also invent scenarios and use the clocks to help them find the elapsed time (“ Alisha left at 6:25 to go to the store. She got back at 7:35. How long was she gone?”)

⏰ Oh, we also used the websites: mathlearningcenter.org and splashlearn.com to do similar activities.

⏰ Put hoola hoops on the whiteboard and they add the numbers, show the requested time or explain the elapsed time.

⏰ I also have the minutes indicated around my class clock to help them out! It really helped them in the beginning!

Ideas to practice telling time with the clocks:

⏰ Pair them up and ask one to pick a time for the other. The other student must show the time on their clock as well as say it. I sometimes asked them to say in for both morning/evening times (i.e. 6h00/18h00).

⏰ A student shows a time on his clock and the other must write it on a whiteboard. I usually specify how many ways I’d like to see it represented (4h00, 4 heures, 16h00, etc).

⏰ A student writes a time on the whiteboard and the other must represent it on the clock.

⏰ We also used them to practice; et quart, moins quart et midi

⏰ They could also invent scenarios and use the clocks to help them find the elapsed time (“ Alisha left at 6:25 to go to the store. She got back at 7:35. How long was she gone?”)

⏰ Oh, we also used the websites: mathlearningcenter.org and splashlearn.com to do similar activities.

⏰ Put hoola hoops on the whiteboard and they add the numbers, show the requested time or explain the elapsed time.

⏰ I also have the minutes indicated around my class clock to help them out! It really helped them in the beginning!

I am extremely passionate about justice, liberty, rights and equity. I thought I’d share a few examples of what we’ve done so far for Black Heritage Month: (sometimes I have mini side discussions if it seems very pertinent depending on what the children bring up).

I know this post would’ve been better suited earlier in the month. However, I sincerely believe we should be sensitizing our students throughout the year. Hopefully you can still use some of the activities below.

🎨We began by doing the amazing project seen above. The students made a much bigger version (like 24 pages wide, 😳🤯!!), it’s in our hallway so all the other classrooms can see it too! We then discussed each individual that was presented. The students each chose one that they’re researching in order to properly present them to the other students.

🙋🏻‍♀️Discussions, discussions, discussionsssss - it quickly became evident that very few had discussed this topic and discussions are by far one of the BEST ways to educate them, let them express themselves, etc. I also clarified words and expressions that weren’t to be used, etc. It’s important we use our voices as teachers/educators/leaders to educate them on these matters!

📚 We’ve read numerous books as well. Unfortunately, there aren’t as many in French so I’ve been translating some.

🎥 We’ve also been watching short videos highlighting the crucial roles these individuals had as well as their impact.

👩🏻‍🏫A colleague of mine suggested an activity she’d done during one of her courses; you hand out those coloured circle stickers (one student will have a different colour than the rest). Then, you ask the students to form groups. In most cases, your students will form groups according to the colour of their circle and you’re left with one student. You then point out that you said to form groups but never indicated that it was to be done according to the colours. etc. It’s a good way to visually demonstrate segregation and discuss it with them. etc.

Most people I know despised conjugating verbs in school and yet it somehow felt like a right of passage, ha! 😣😅 This is my first year teaching numerous verbs and I’ve been trying to find engaging and interactive ways for my students to learn them...👩🏻‍🏫 Here’s what I’ve been implementing so far:

1.They add the weekly verb in their “livret de verbes” which they keep in their desk so thy may refer to it whenever they’re writing.

2. They do a worksheet. As depicted in the pictures above, it varies based on the time of year.

3.They make a coincoin (the first few times where rather time consuming but they nailed it in a short time span!) I recommend using a YouTube video and pausing after each step for the first few times.

We’re in a minority setting, therefore, I like to give them time to practice orally as well. I pair off the students with their coincoins. Once they’ve chosen their verb, they have to make a sentence with it. If we have enough time, I’ll also ask them to write it on their whiteboard. They love using both the coincoins and the whiteboards so it’s a win win, 🙌🏽🎉!

4.Boom Cards!! These guys have been a lifesaver- both in the classroom and for parents! I’ve had several mention their kids used to struggle with their homework but that this has been a game changer, 👌🏽.

5.Google forms- 💻! I’ve yet to add all my Google forms (😬🙃🙊- it’s on my list of things to do!) but they are SO practical! I immediately know whether or not my students have grasped the concepts and can give them pertinent feedback within seconds!

6.Mad Libs-I’ll also randomly do these! My students had never heard of this and MAN, they loved it!! They kept begging to do more and to read them to the class. They were fully engage through the entire activity each time. Plus, it helps them practice other concepts: les noms communs, les noms propres, les adjectifs, etc. I’ll be posting some of these shortly!

Evidently, we also discussed the positive aspects of social media,🤓❤️💻📱🎮!!

The students noticed that when they surrounded themselves with positive models/influencers/accounts that their perception of themselves and of life improved, ✨!

They were quick to point out that they could improve their skills - whether it was drawing, singing or musical instruments, cooking, etc. They could find or follow others who had the same passion, which gave them a sense of community, 💕.

They mentioned socializing with their friends (especially during the pandemic). At lunch, I hear them arranging a time to meet online to play certain games. They’re doing so in an inclusive manner as well aka they’re playing with all students, not just their best friends. They exchange strategies as well. Admittedly, I often procure the vocabulary since it’s unfamiliar to them - so it also leads to teachable moments!

There are SO many educational YouTube channels as well ( personally, I LOVE The School of Life, Psych2Go as well as Kurzgesagt- In a Nutshell). I’m a big psychology buff, lol! As for the students, there are quite a few more English ones (that I tend to translate for them) but I’ve stumbled upon a few really good French over the years like TV5Monde and ZoneJeunesse (Radio-Canada)... I also highly recommend the tv series Les Frères Kratts if you’re teaching anything pertaining to animals - it’s a hidden gem, 💎!

Have you discussed the influence of social media with your students? 🤔🤓💻📱🎮

This year, I’m teaching a 3/4 and my first teachable moment was at the beginning of the year when I used a website for an activity (it resembled an interactive board with post-its). I should’ve anticipated the outcome and
deactivated the function to “like” another student’s comment - not sure how I missed that, 🙈! I was astounded by the amount of students that got engrossed with getting likes from others (as well as directly asking others to like their posts) rather than focus on their work. Therefore, I stopped the activity earlier than expected and began one of many discussions regarding the effects of social media such as;
🔍Seeking validation from others (whether in a positive or negative manner)
🔍Lack of confidence due to comparison (to others or to ourselves if we use filters, etc), !
🔍How it influences our mental health (right down to the hormones, 🧠!)
🔍How it influences our physical health
🔍How others’ voices and opinions can shape not only how we see ourselves but how we perceive the world therefore it’s crucial that we surround ourselves with positive people/accounts

We also did an entire unit regarding how vital it is to be vigilant and always protect your personal information.
